FAQ

  • Do I have to be a MA resident to get funding?
No! However due to our current funding streams we do prioritize abortions being performed in Massachusetts.
  • Do I have to get my abortion in MA to get funding?
Tides does have some funding for out of state pledges though so you are welcome to reach out and if we can’t help, we can guide you through finding your nearest fund even if you are not in MA.
  • If I have already had an abortion, can I retroactively get reimbursed?
Tides currently does not reimburse for past procedures but we are committed to helping our community however we can. If you have had an abortion in the last month but have experienced financial hardship as a result of paying out of pocket please reach out to us and we will work with you to explore options!
  • Do I have to get my abortion done at a specific place to receive funding?
No! Tides has billing agreements with most area providers so we will confirm that we have all the information we need from you and the clinic when we talk during your intake! Please be cautious of fake clinics that don’t have your best interests at heart and work to deny you access to the full range of reproductive health care. Verified clinics are listed both on Reproductive Equity Now’s and the National Network of Abortion Funds’ websites.
  • Can I receive funding if I am undocumented or not a US citizen?
Yes! We will never ask you about your documentation status.
  • Where does the money come from?
Tides receives individual donations and grants, we use some of those funds to pay for abortions.
  • Do abortion funds ever run out of money?
Abortion funds do run out of money but when that happens we can help you connect with other funds or options to pay for your abortion.
  • If Tides is out of money, where can I go for financial help?
Even if we can’t help you ourselves, we can help you find others that can, please still reach out!
  • Will Tides cover the full cost of my abortion?
If Tides is unable to cover the whole cost of your procedure we will work with you to connect to other funds who can help! Tides is committed to helping you through the process no matter what you need. Please ask!
  • Can I receive support from more than one abortion fund?
Yes! While it is often not necessary, the funds in MA collaborate often and will guide you through getting the amount you need!
  • How far in advance of my abortion do I need to apply for funding?
We like to set things up at least 48 hours in advance but even if it is the day of your procedure please call!
  • What information do I have to provide to receive funding?
You will need to provide your name, date of birth, and your appointment information. We may ask some questions about your family size, income, and how you identify, but responding to those questions are always optional!
  • How does the money get to me?
We send funds directly to the clinic or partnering abortion fund, we do not send to the individuals themselves. Funding gets pledged to the clinic where you are being seen and they send us the bill!
  • When will I receive funds? (Do I have to have already had my abortion? What if I can’t afford my out of pocket copay?)
In most cases, funds will go directly to the clinic where you have your abortion and we will pay the bill. Tides will pay costs associated with insurance like co-pays or deductibles.
  • Does Masshealth cover Abortions?
Masshealth Standard and many other Masshealth plans WILL cover Abortion procedures. To see if you qualify for a Masshealth plan go to Health Care for All or call 800-272-4232
